Obituary

Gary Cooper Overby, a resident of Independence, Louisiana passed away on Saturday, August 31, 2024 at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center surrounded by his loving wife and children at the age of 68. Gary was born on December 3, 1955 in Wichita, KS. He was most proud of his wife, 3 children, 13 grandchildren and great grandchild and loved nothing more than to be surrounded by his big family and friends he considered family. Gary was known by his many colleagues as a true leader that lead with the perfect balance of head and heart and a work ethic that was unmatched.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents Harold and Donna Overby, parents in law Henry and Annie Marretta; grandparents Lloyd and Mildred Cooper, Hulon and Nola Overby and brother-in-law Jack Coslan.

Gary was survived by his loving wife of 49 years Jeanette Marretta Overby.  His children Gerrod Overby (Rebecca), Leann Avery (Adam) and Gregory Overby (Shayla).  Grandchildren Brooklyn Overby (Landon), Reanna Barattini (Trey), Lathan Overby, Laiken Hoskins, Nicholas Bonura, Random Harrison, Cooper Avery, Ryleigh Overby, Hayden Harrison, Evan Avery, Olivia Avery, Eliza Harrison and Noah Overby.  Great-Grandson Colsen Faulkner.  Siblings Julie Sukkar (Ma'Moun), Mike Overby (Brenda), Greg Overby (Teresa), Jenny Magliolo (Vince), Marietta Coslan, Rosie Sowell, Andrea Costa (Joe); along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Gary's legacy is carried on through his family whose lives have been profoundly shaped by his presence and love.  His passing leaves a void in the hearts of all who knew him, but his spirit will forever resonate in the memories cherished by his loved ones.

Visitation at McKneely Funeral Home, Amite, from 6:00PM until 8:00PM on Wednesday and from 9:00AM until 11:30AM on Thursday. Religious Services at Mater Dolorosa Catholic Church, Independence, at 12:00 Noon on Thursday, September 5, 2024. Services conducted by Fr. Reuben Dykes.
