Obituary

Mervel Albert King Sr. was born on January 12, 1937, in Ponca City, Oklahoma and passed away peacefully surrounded by family on February 13, 2025, in The Butterfly Wing of Baton Rouge General Hospital.

Mervel dedicated much of his life to public service as a deputy of Roseland's Police Department, Roseland's Assistant Fire Chief, and a Roseland City Councilman.  He was a member of the Amite City Masonic Lodge #175 for many years. Mervel was a hard-working man and was self-employed much of his life owning businesses King's Asphalt Paving and King's Septic Tank Service.  He was always contributing to his community.  Mervel loved outdoor activities including hunting and fishing, especially with his children and grandchildren.  Mervel loved to play horseshoes and hosted annual tournaments for many years bringing his family and friends together for fellowship.  He was truly a family man and always the life of the party.

Mervel is survived by six children, Mervel Albert King Jr. "Skipper" and wife Jeanie, David Keith King and wife Karen, Lloyd Lee King and wife Nicole, Melinda Lou King Ferguson and husband Steve, John King and wife Brooke, and Edward Cutrer.  Three siblings, Ronald Lee King and wife Melrose, Richard King and wife Ruby, and Janet "Candy" King Pourciau.  17 grandkids, 24 great-grandkids, and 13 great-great grandkids as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Mervel is preceded in death by wife Connie Ray Lawrence King, wife Vera Cutrer, parents John Albert King and Janette, siblings Jack King, John D, King, Robert Loyd King, Bessie Mae King, Dorothy King, Alice King Lyons, Carolyn Patterson, and Betty Jean King, Grandchildren Chase Garrett King, Jordan Wyatt King, and John Tyler King.

Visitation is at McKneely Funeral Home in Amite, Louisiana from 8:30 A.M. until funeral services at 10:00 A.M. on Monday, February 17, 2025.  Services conducted by Pastor David Cutrer and interment will be held immediately after at Arcola-Roseland Cemetery in Arcola, Louisiana followed by food and fellowship at Roseland Baptist Church.
