A resident of Amite, LA, passed away peacefully during the night at his home. Sylvester was born in Greensburg, LA, raised in Easleyville, LA and attended Greensburg High School and LSU. He worked in construction most of his life before becoming a Rural Letter Carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 20 years before retiring. Sylvester was an avid reader and could be found most mornings studying his Bible or reading the newspaper with a cup of coffee. Sylvester served as a Deacon and Sunday School teacher for many years at First Baptist Church of Amite. He had a loving, giving heart as exemplified by his founding of the Hope Center to serve his community. He was full of fun and always joking. Although the sad disease of dementia overtook him for the last several years of his life, his wife, Shirley, cared for him with undying devotion, and he was surrounded by the love of his children and grandchildren.  He is survived by his wife of 48 years, together as a couple for 50 years, Shirley Williams Humphrey; four children, Jamie Humphrey, Brandee Pittman (Ronnie), Byron Humphrey (Jeanna), and Jodi Manton (Jackie); 10 Grandchildren, Kriston, Jarred, Peyton, Coleton, Brennin, Gabe, Jonah, Hannah, Jakob, and Rebekah; Sister, Loleta Blades Anzalone; and numerous Great Grandchildren, Nephews and a Niece. Preceded in death by his parents Percy and Thelma Humphrey; his sisters, Linda Reeves and Paulette Simmons; his parents-in-law Alvis and Jo Williams; and four nephews and a niece. The family would like to thank Modern Hospice for their excellent care. Special thanks to his nurses, Lisa King and Lauren Bennett, CNA Veronica Stewart, Latonya McGee, Social Worker, and John Cook, Chaplain. We know that Sylvester's soul is now with the Lord, and he is no longer imprisoned in a state of dementia. Those of us who are believers in Jesus Christ as Savior, that He died on the cross as the Sacrificial Lamb to cover our sins, was buried and raised to life on the third day, know that one day we will all be together again in our glorified bodies. 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 and Revelation 21-22. There will be a Memorial Service on Saturday, October 5, 2024 at Montpelier Baptist Church with visitation at 9:00 AM and followed by services at 11:00 AM, conducted by pastor Rusty Durand.
