Vera Sue Dyer Durr, passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, September 23, 2022 at 5:30 am. She was born on September 5, 1946, in Poteau, Oklahoma. She was 76 years old. She graduated from Amite High School in 1964. Very competitive in sports and her love for music. She played the clarinet in the Amite High School Marching Band as well as played basketball. Vera was a leader, teacher, and very compassionate in everything she did. Her passion was helping people and taking care of her family. Vera, met her husband Emile C. Durr, Jr. at SLU. Traveled with him and lived in places like Mozambique, Argentina, and Zimbabwe for a while because of her husband's job in the oilfield industry. She later graduated from Thomas Edison State College with a Bachelor's Degree in Philosophy/ Religious Studies. She worked at St. Helena Catholic Church as the Pastoral Associate as the RCIA Director and Teacher. She would counsel people on their faith before they joined the Church. She taught Catechism and also was a Religion Teacher at Mater Dolorosa School. Vera was a coach for a few years with the Amite Soccer League back in the 1980's. She also loved riding and raising horses as well as managing a cattle farm. Vera is survived by her husband of 56 years, Emile C. Durr, Jr., her two children, Victoria Durr (son) Austin, and Errol Durr (daughter) Shelbi and (son) Michael. Preceded in death by her son David James Durr and her parents James Henry Dyer and Adele Helen Dykes Dyer. Visitation will be at McKneely Funeral Home, Amite, on Monday, September 26, 2022 from 8:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Catholic Mass will be at St. Helena Catholic Church on Monday, September 26, 2022 at 11:30 a.m. Burial will be in the Sharkey Cemetery in Amite.
